Installation of Axis Mundi at Burning Man 2016
Axis Mundi Installation at Burning Man 2016
This year we installed our Burning Man project entitled Axis Mundi, literally “Center World” or World Axis.
Concept: In the center of a circle of healing women sculpted of glass, with nothing hidden in their transparent nature, and with their arms outstretched and gaze following yours, you are able to feel truly and deeply seen to the core, where no flaw exists.
In those moments we are actually seen for all that we are without judgement, we become perfect. We feel our infinite nature, we feel the axis pole of our own existence. Each of us is the center of our own universe, creating of our individual reality. Each of us holds a unique Axis Mundi.
I created the 15 exterior paintings on fine artist grade canvas, the celebratory women painted in professional acrylic on panels nearly 3 meters / 9 feet tall for each abstract silhouette painting. They represent the feminine current that sees perfection in every baby, in every soul, and celebrates that divine nature.
The inner paintings of Platonic Solids were 150 cm or 60 inches square done in oil on fine canvas. They represent our simple base composition, the key to healing at the fundamental level, perfection that is always available, healing that is always past tense.
The glass women sculpted by +Jason Hickey are 8 feet tall or about 2.4 meters, and about 2 inches or 5 cm thick. Each glass woman weighs over 200 lbs, and with the steel framing, the weight was nearing a ton. Those women were solidly holding that circle! Yet they hid no agenda or judgement, allowing the perfection of light to pass through their bodies. And as you walked around their circle, their eyes seemed to lock on yours no matter where you stood.
Overhead bells rang, connecting the inner circle to the outer with the vibrations of sound. Inside the women held space, and outside, the celebration danced around a bright yellow spot on the Playa.
At the teardown, we found a note stuffed into the framing, from “Arthur.” The note summarizes why we do this hard work. Arthur, you touched us deeply, right back. And for everyone else who made it to the Burn this year — If you visited, thank you!
Here are more photos from the installation, including my paintings and the sculpture of Jason Hickey:
